Who Can Claim Maternity UIF Benefits?

  • You must be a South African citizen or permanent resident with valid identification.
  • Can be claimed by any female employee who has been contributing to UIF fund for at least 13 weeks prior to making the claim
  • Who is pregnant or had given birth to a child and submitted the claim before the child turns 6 months
  • Female contributing employees who miscarried in the third trimester or had a stillbirth may claim 6 weeks
  • Employees who resign while pregnant or during maternity leave can still claim maternity benefits.

How Much Can I Expect to Receive?

  • UIF pays 66% flat rate of your average salary, depending on your income.
  • Payments are capped at R17,712 per month.
  • The total amount you receive depends on how many credits you have.
  • You can receive benefits for up to 121 days (about 4 months) if you have not returned to work.
  • If you sadly experience a third-trimester miscarriage or stillbirth, you are still allowed to claim for 6 weeks.

When Should I Apply?

  • Apply as soon as possible after going on maternity leave.
  • You must apply within 6 months of your baby's birth.
  • Applying early ensures you don't lose benefits.
  • You must reapply monthly to continue receiving payments.
