Who Can Claim Illness UIF Benefits?

  • You must be a South African citizen or permanent resident with valid identification.
  • Any UIF contributing employee who is sick and unable to work for more than 14 consecutive days due to their illness
  • Who is receiving partial or no remuneration from their employer while on sick leave

How Much Can I Expect to Receive?

  • UIF pays between 38% and 60% of your average salary, depending on your income.
  • Payments are capped at R17,712 per month.
  • You can claim for as many credits you have available or until you go back to work, whichever comes first
  • If your employer is paying less than your normal salary, you can claim the difference between what your employer pays you and your prescribed credit amount

You Cannot Claim If:

  • You are already receiving UIF unemployment benefits
  • You are being paid by the compensation fund
  • You are sick for less than 14 consecutive days
  • You refuse medical treatment

When Should I Apply?

  • You must apply within 6 months of getting ill
  • Applying early ensures you don't lose benefits.
  • You must reapply monthly to continue receiving payments.
